Dane x Dogo
DANGOs

Dango’s aka The Olympic Road Dog
This is a cross that I expect to be a regular on the menu as soon as I find the right Dane. That said I’ve done it several times with the best Dane I could find already. I have adults here on the ranch to see, and others in the surrounding area. For those who want a Dane; but not the dumb, sickly, frail, week nerved, short lived, drooling, couch potatoes that now ware the mantle…. this cross may be the quickest way to turn back the hands of time.
Physically the result is really rather stunning. Dane…ish in appearance, Dane like in scale, likely owing to the Dane being present in the Dogo already; but more muscular. The most obvious physical difference is the head which looses the loose jowls, thin boned muzzle, the inherently stupid look, in favor of something tight lipped, wider in through the skull and muzzle, more formidable looking.

The body on the whole takes on a more solid look, while remaining quite agile, perhaps the single most athletic dog we have to date. These dogs without exception move like the wind. It really is a thing of beauty to watch.

Temperamentally I find them to be fairly balanced dogs; the Dogo’s dog aggression is nullified by the gentle giant. Both breeds are exceptional with children, so no surprise that crosses seem to be also. Prey drive is reduced relative the pure Dogo and increased relative the pure Dane, not bad for hunters perhaps, less so folks with livestock. Not a cross I’d suggest for anyone whose surrounds might contain critters they don’t want hunted.
We will continue to breed this combination, As well as combining the mix with other breeds, for example we have taken a male Dogo/Dane to female Boerboel which makes for a nice versatile athletic molloser of considerable scale, while toning the prey drive down another notch. Or taking it to a Kangal boerboel in what we call the Olympic Quatro, aka the Olympic maxi melt, aka the Olympic mastiff. But the real sticking point is finding a Dane that I don’t feel is a step backwards in too many areas, relative these other breeds. If /when I find a Dane that I can respect as a Dane, you can be sure we will do it all over again.
