2. Finders Fee $300

For anyone that points me in the direction from which I ultimately acquire a Great Dane. I’m looking for something special, I don’t care where in the world it is, but please do have some reason to believe it’s a Dane of exceptional smarts, nerve, and courage our you’ll waste our time, yours and mine both.

1. Boerboel cross:

Mandela x Quatra: Due second week in April 2012, accepting deposits now

What shall we call this ? The Olympic Boerboel ? Boerboel Plus ? Boerbatra ? :)

By any name, these should be some impressive dogs. I probably shouldn’t toot their little horns too hard just yet, but I’m excited. Quatra represents the accumulation of my picks bred and raised amongst four breeds and close to a decade of sifting.

She’s probably the heaviest female out here now, moves well, has a very balanced stable sort of disposition. Just enough of the Kangal not to be needy of nature or slight on coat. The pick among picks among picks among picks

Mandela, physically, is one of the most impressive Boerboels I’ve seen in all my travels, here at home and in S. Africa. I don’t even know what he weighs anymore its getting scary maybe 170 ? But it’s all muscle and bone, and he moves dam well. He’s a middle linebacker with 4.5 speed. And sweet as he is with me and mine, he’s equally wary and fearless with strangers. And he’s great with my goats, couldn’t hope for much more in a boerboel, I’m pretty happy with him, he’s gonna stay busy.

——————————————————————————————————————

2. Boerboel Cross:

Mandela (Boerboel ) x Tyra Banks ( Dango (( Dane x Dogo))

Due late April, accepting deposits now

Physically this breeding should be scary, Tyra is long tall defined and as athletic a bitch as I have, Mandela is just a tank. What’s the down side ? Well, Tyra is half Dane, which means she’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. But hey, the smartest dog won’t write ya poetry. Look for a huge muscular, short haired, bully/mastiff out of these. There is no Kangal in the mix here, so pure short coat, and purely people oriented, Zero independence, zero roaming, etc. The consummate muscle bound yes man dog perhaps.

I expect these two to be perhaps the most physically impressive combination to date.

* To calculate go to new home dates, figure roughly 8 wks after birth/due dates

Adult Dogs and older pups for sale/trade

Scroll down for photos, and current options.

As a breeder I almost always keep a pup or two from every litter to study, to evaluate, call it rookie camp, despite knowing there are only so many slots to fill and most will be raised only to be parted with later. There is no other way to be sure which ones I ultimately want, pups are placed too soon to really know. Those that remain are almost always my picks of their respective litters.

Every year the competition get’s tougher, the dogs that stay better, those that don’t make the cut better. It’s simple math, I’ve got to loose an adult every time a youngster impresses enough to warrant it. Or a young adult by the time I decide a change is not warranted. I suppose the best analogy would be a sports organization; every year they bring in new talent, by a variety of means, draft, trade, free agency. And every year they must get down to a certain number. It’s very much the same here.

Older dogs are subject to be moved on for a variety of reasons; some times to make way for new, different, or better genes. More often because I kept a youngster around to take a better look but decided not to give it a slot. And less often because they simply reached an age that warrants it.

These can still be fine pets, and good editions to a family. In any case chances are if they stuck around my place long enough to grow up, much less get old, they’re pretty good dogs. Such a dog often times appreciates becoming and only dog more than one who has been graced with that status from puppyhood. As a result they can, and often do, bond all the more intensely with the singular devoted owner or family they have at long last found, which is all any dog ever really wants.

And though it’s rare that I am asked to do so, I will take back any dog I’ve sold, for any reason. As such, time to time, I will try and place one of those dogs in this section if I believe it’s suited to be re-homed.

I would encourage anyone not attached to the idea of a puppy to consider a dog from this section, they are often the best value on a number of levels, particularly for those who have an immediate need a puppy can’t fill.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

1: Purebred South African Boerboel ( aka S. African Mastiff )

Year old, intact, female, never bred, can be purchased with or without papers.

” Coomore’s Tanaii” is the least aggressive Boerboel I’ve ever owned, gets along well with all the other dogs, puppies, farm animals you name it. She’s relatively smart, and athletic, but a little shorter in stature than I like. She might be ideal for someone who wanted a Boerboel but was put off by the level of dog aggression often present, a very low liability factor on this Boerboel. See the three photos directly below.

2. Purebred Dogo Argentino

Year old, in-tact male,

“Oakee” came to me with his sister at about 10 wks from a breeder that had owed me two papered Dogo pups for 5 years…. and then did not produce the papers. I placed both him and his sister with people I trust, to raise, in case the papers came through. As yet they have not, although the breeder tells me the problems has been resolved and they will… I tend to think it’s true, but it is out of my hands. so I will sell him without papers, with the option to buy them also if they ever materialize. The friend that was raising Oakee, can’t continue to do so, but thanks to him Oakee is actually more worldly than most of my dogs, he’s lived in a house, loves to ride in cars, get’s on well with other dogs, great with kids, etc.

The breeder said he was BAER tested good in both ears, I never got that paper work either but he does seem to hear very well. He’s smart as a whip too. Sound, athletic without any physical issues that I can see.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————4. Olympic “Tres” aka Boerboel x kango ( kangal x Dogo )

“Silvio Berlusconi” Male, born July 21/2011

I’m leaning away from selling Silvio, but I may due a breeding that I would expect to produce pups just like him, so I’ve left him up for people to see. If you would be interested in one like him, or a black version, get in touch, those are the colors we got in that three way.

Again, my keeper, from his litter, one in which we were pleasantly surprised to get “blue” dogs. This is a striking young pup, again on track to be just a huge dog, I’m thinking 160 lbs perhaps, with a very unusual color he is one I am hard pressed to part with, but I’ve got his sister, and full time males slots here are the most competitive. That said, he won’t be cheap, shallow pockets need not apply. But if nothing else posting him here might serve to see how much interest there is in another breeding that might produce others like him, who could be had for considerably less.

Good with everything, kids, goats, chickens, other dogs, puppies even cats.

Seen below at 6 months and 95 lbs.

Seen viewer right at just under 8 months with his sister, Agressa Silva

Need I say more ?

I Love this f&^%ing dog !

Smartest, bravest, best nerves out here. He’s the only dog out here I won’t go to make a point with empty handed, and he’s the gentlest and most graceful around young kids, two or four legged; a lotta heart, a lotta grace… equals class.

He’s something special, he’s something to build on. More on him later, for now I just want to get some photos up.

Oz’s Penn hip ( exceptional also .28 .28 )

Oz at just over two.

2 years old

Ever wonder why dun with a black mask is the default color of so many creatures ?

Oz at 14 months

Oz at 14 months

Oz under a year here, all arms and legs. The Boerboel is an honest 160lb. good looking bastard, that I never used cause he’s not even close to right temperamentally or mentally ( he’s retarded )

Every time I look at the photo below I’m reminded of the earnest scolding I got from a well educated and worldy Turk in Istanbul who was adamant that Kangals simply die if taken from their dry native Eastern Turkey region ( chuckle ) Urban Turks, turns out, often know even less about dogs than urban Americans, and spout all manner of proud and often foolish gibberish about their National dog the Kangal.

Below Oz risks sure death in one of the ponds in my woods

Oz at 8 months

5 months

Oz here at 5 months, witnessing his first kidding. Most people that deal in livestock guardians would scold me for even allowing a pup this age unfettered access to this, but I was willing to lose a kid to see for myself if there was any real truth to the claims. And sure enough, as rambunctious as was at that age with the big goats, all he wanted to do was lick this kid. He never needed teaching from an older dog or to be separated till he was older; that’s probably not a fair expectation to set, but it’s true of him. Now as an adult he’s the teacher and I rotate young dogs/pups into a pen with him and young kids, said young dogs and pups promptly get hammered by Oz if they even think about getting rough with the young goats.

Oz here around 10 weeks, shortly after we made it back.

Oz here at about 8 weeks, in Istanbul

O

8 wks again, with me in Istanbul, preparing for the final leg of our great adventure

Sevdi ( kangal )

Sevdi’s Penn Hip ( .27 .27 ) I don’t think anybody in the world can put to better scores together than her and Oz ( .28 .28 )

The most striking thing about Sevdi for me is the way she moves, talk about floating, she’ll be the first dog I shoot video of. She came to me as an adult, so I don’t have quite the same bond or knowledge, as I would a dog I raised; but she’s good with my goats and my kids, and always on the job. She’s also got that same steady temperament I see so often in Kangals, no nervous energy at all, self contained. I’ll start with a couple shots of her just after arriving at my place after a few days on the road with me and my 14 year old, this is her meeting two of my younger children for the first time… needless to say I trusted her implicitly by then, she’s a very sweet dog, she was a family dog in her first home.

below; Sevdi and Oz

The world belongs to a good looking dog that can dance

Could be love

But it’s not all roses

11 pups born on the coldest night of the year, a record breaking 5 degrees that night I heard the little shrieks of newborns not happy and went out to find she had some how dumped about 5 of them still wet from being born, out the opening of the dog house and into the snow. I put them back in and I went back inside. I don’t believe in helping. They all lived. The Kangal, as a breed, has not been babied, it has not been ruined; It is I’m sure the healthiest and most hardy of all that I work with.

Touchdown !

I have no excuse for showing this photo… except I love it :) My fascination with genetics baring the ultimate fruit :)

Hope was a pretty good bitch; tough, smart, protective, and eager to please.

She, like her daughters, was constantly looking you in the eye

Hope, just under a year here, with one of my sons

“Dopper Bafana” Sire of ” Tall Water”, ” Agressa”, ” Boelbella” all from “Hope”

Bafana was an outside male I used; He was well put together as you can see. And I know he had good penn hip scores, for a Boerboel- .37 .37 because I made testing a condition of the agreement, despite being shown excellent hips scores out of S. Africa. In hindsight, I guess I never did trust the owner; but the dog was stable, confident.

The owner turned out to be the most twisted character I’ve yet to meet in the often strange drama I’ve come to refer to as “As the Boerboel Turns,” if not Dogdom on the whole. An individual, turns out, so bizarre I’m disinclined to type his name, cause I don’t want to be associated with it, even incidentally, even by search engine.

if ever I needed an excuse not to give a guy a dog (which was supposed to be the stud fee) his story surly provided it ( chuckle ) The truth however is, we were exchanging threats before I even knew his bio, cause he tried to con me. But it actually worked out to be a pretty good deal, for me. I expect I’m on a very short list of people that managed not to get Bleeped dealing with him. I got a nice litter out of it. Gratitude and or bullets remains all I have to offer in return.

The brindle below was named “Doc” out of “Night Train” and ” Blackwell’s Vegter” and dam to my “Hope”

“Doc” again

Doc again

Doc belonged to a gentleman by the name of Jerry Heater, who if memory serves, said she was the best he ever had, he also said she had exceptional penn hip scores.

Doc was bred to Blackwells Vegter with Penn hip scores in the .3’s if memory serves. A breeding repeated several times by the Kansahoma kabal and Blackwell kept and bred several bitches from it heavily.

” Night Train” sired ” Doc ” dam of “Hope” dam of ” Tall Water,” ” Agressa,” “BoelBella”

“Night Train” ( now deceased ) belonged to a breeder by the name of David Harris who basically built his kennel of him. John Blackwell the founder of the USBA, also used this dog very heavily. A lotta folks in a Boerboel centric circles of the Kansas/oklahoma region seem to think Mr. Harris walks on water, I know better. But what ever one might say about these two gentlemen nobody can deny they bring an extraordinary amount of dog experience and dog knowledge. And they saw fit to build on this dog, like no other. He’s probably the single most bred dog in USBA history.

Night train was purported to have Penn hip scores of .28 .28 which was the best score in Boerboels for a considerable period of time.

“Night Train” again below, The foundation stud of the Harris/Blackwell jugernaut

“Boelbella” is the most athletic of three athletic sisters, you would be hard pressed to find a dog this size that move as well as she, I really need to get some video to do her justice. As eager to please as all three, if not quite as quick to understand as Agressa.

Agressa’s OFA

Agressa is the smartest of “Hope’s” three daughters, the alpha of her litter, the natural leader. She’s the type of dog that has always got her eyes trained on yours; she’s a thinking dog. If i’m going on a trip and I want to take a boerboel, she’s the one.

Below you see” Agressa” (center) as a pup with sister “Tallwater” on the left and sister ” Boelbella” on the right; you can see who’s ready for direction.

See the difference in the eye contact, just a subtile moment, but a good example

Below: Agressa all grown up

Agressa with two of her 1/2 Dogo sons ( see “Dobo” )

Agressa, like her sister Boellbella here, and like any dog I keep, is quite athletic

And they’re off

Boerboels: " Tallwater "

Tallwater is the largest framed of “Hope’s” three daughters, and for whatever reasons, has always had a strong bond with the goats; which upon realizing, I encouraged. Her mother could refrain from killing goats, and the sisters also. But Tall Water actually likes them, has relationships, favorites, even keeps the peace amongst them.

If I bring a new goat into the herd, she’s makes sure it knows its place till its one of the group. In fact the only problem I have with her as a livestock Guardian is that she’s so protective of newborn kids if a mother steps away in that first day or two, she’s liable to post up next to that newborn, and she won’t even let its own mamma near it; which is a problem, so I do have to separate her from birthing does for the first few days.

Signature shot

I chose the photos below to demonstrate how she often positions herself strategically. Our pasture borders the edge of a vast wilderness, she knows from which direction predators will come, she always seems to position her self accordingly… even for a nap

From this angle you can see how close the woods are, viewer left. If trouble comes, it will be from there.

Tallwater again

Built the way I like, not too low slung, more leg than many a Boerboel bitch. The male version of her from the same litter topped 30”s at the shoulder.

Website is a job Site

A couple things to consider

A. The format is for blogs, but a blog it is not, pay no attention to the dates attached to the posts themselves, most of the time that doesn’t tell you anything except how long I’ve had a website, and oft times I play with the dates to influence the location of the posts

B. Navigation is best done by using the headings on the reader left, scrolling will only confuse you.

C. I realize copy editing is in order… but given that’s been the case for sometime now and I’m no closer to getting around to it then ever…. let’s just call it finished.

If you’re subject to trip on the occasional typo or misspelled word you’d better watch your step.

My Argentine Dogos

Scroll down for a quick photo trip through my Dogo’s with links to their progeny and B.A.E.R. and Penn hip tests.

Negrecha…. the bomb, at around 2 years of age here

The only remaining dog from all below, she’s my keeper. Negrecha is brave, smart, tough as nails, and an exceptional mother like Saga before her.

100 lb. female ( that would be 120-130 breeders lbs. )

Negrecha mother of “Tyra Banks” by Dane ( Magic )

Negrecha mother of ”lefty” by Kangal ( Oz )

B.A.E.R tested

Penn hipped,

Below, Negrecha as an adolescent, under a year.

And one more at about 5 weeks

Dubbed Negro Culo, by yours truly, the F.C.I. felt compelled to pull rank and renamed him, sans my consent or knowledge, Negro “Lulo” ( chuckle)

By any name this Brother to Negrecha is the owner of the single best Penn hip score for a Dogo in the world last I checked.

Penn hip .27 .27

B.A.E.R. tested also.

Negro Culo aka Lulo, again at just about one year, below

This male was exceptionally athletic, one of the things I most prize in the Dogo, a hundred plus lbs. and giving up nothing by way of speed, power, or endurance.

And one more

Audacity Saga: Dam of Negrecha and Negro Culo, below

Saga was the dog with whom I returned from my 7 week Dogo trek in Argentina in 2006 after having her bred to “Attraction” below. And from whom I had 10 pups from which to choose for myself. She was a smart dog, but wary of strangers, not as outgoing as many Dogos, but a love junkie to be sure with her people, and an exceptional mother. like many of the Antares line, which is virtually indistinguishable from Garfunkel’s Audacity kennel as the two have been working together for decades, she’s was good size bitch, taller of frame than many lines, which I prefer.

Having realized that “los Medanos” lines were disproportionately represented in the states I wanted to bring back something else, something worthy but other than, something that could then be bred TO Los medanos lines. Those in the know on Dogos understand the merit of Maria Angelica’s Antares lines.

Below you can see the litter complete with Negro Culo’s defining mark; I was forewarned that Attraction might throw “spots” I didn’t care, I was sold on his temperament.

You can see Negrecha’s black ear in the photo below, it was clear to me early on she would be my female keeper, here she is enjoying the benefits of that status

Audacity Attraction: Sire of Negrecha and Negro Culo

This is the dog that made my decision for me; after traveling thousands of miles and looking at dozens of Dogos in Argentina. The single most impressive Dogo I’ve met in all my travels, physically and otherwise. The first thing one notices about Attraction is his size; easily 31 inches and at least 150 lbs. the second is his movement, as graceful and light on his feet as an athletic dog half that size. But the most impressive thing, for me, was his temperament, his intelligence, his nerve.

Albert Garfunkel ( owner of Audacity kennel ) has more champions in more countries than any other Dogo breeder in the world, I couldn’t care less. Attraction is the dog that accompanied his wife when she went out, in a place where car jackings are so common they have a “guard” sitting in a booth whose job is watch for vehicles who’s drivers are being forcibly controlled going in or out of these gaited communites, like Alberts, within which all live in small gaited compounds, walls within walls.

Attraction was the family guardian, the one they let roam their compound at night; but perhaps more importantly also the one that was out with their children and their friends during the day. And the only dog of many owned by Albert that he chose to do Schutzund work with.

I hesitate to repeat in a public forum some of what I know about this dog; But having met him, having looked in his eyes, I would say he belongs in that rarified class of dogs unimpressed with humanity. Not an aggressive dog mind you, not at all, just fearless.

Kango "Lefty" ( kangal x Dogo )

Aka “The olympic Schizophrenic”

Lefty below hanging out with a newborn goat kid,

Lefty’s photo album

Lefty’s fellow KANGO litter-mates album

So, now that we’ve done it, we’ve thanked the president of the the Kangal Dog Club of America for his inspiration, and expressed our heart felt disregard to the Kangal and Dogo purists everywhere… what did we get ?

Mostly I’d say what we got was pleasant surprises. I kept one, “Lefty,” but I’ve gotten quite a bit of feedback from owners of his litter mates and the general picture is pretty consistent. Somehow in crossing two very serious, pretty hard, and relatively aggressive dogs….. we actually got something softer than either parent in many regards.

Who’d a thunk it ? Experienced dog crossers might. I’ve heard similar refrains with a whole slew of bandog/pit dog type crosses. It’s more art than science to be sure, but anecdotes do form patterns in numbers

But I’m going to concentrate on Lefty, because that’s what I know, first hand. And the biggest and most pleasant surprise with him is that he can be trusted as a stock guardian. I didn’t bill any of these dogs as such, nor would I, and I do crosses better suited to that end. But the fact remains with no particular training he has learned to leave my critters alone. That is a thing a Dogo really can’t be taught. If Lefty were one of Mendel’s Peas we might be tempted to say a Dogos prey drive is recessive to a Kangals lack there of, of course it’s not that simple. But for practical purposes it might as well be.

The other big surprise is he demonstrates a minimal amount of dog aggression. Given the relatively high amount of that in both parent breeds I was frankly a little concerned. Turns out Lefty, and from what I hear, his litter mates, are relative gentlemen of the Canine world. Those are the big surprises.

Here’s what’s not. He roams more than a Dogo, less than a Kangal. His coat is in between. His independence level is in between. His biddability seems to oscillate between both extremes. And he’s extremely smart, like both parents, even if his thinking is not quite like either, he is definitely a thinking dog.

Lefty is very, very good with all things small; children, puppies, goats kids etc. He seems to have gotten the protective thing from the kangal along with a healthy dose of self awareness ( won’t lick a toddler over like a dogo ) and the nurturing, licking tendency of the Dogo. I’ve witnessed Lefty dutifully clean the wound of a male dog “Mandela” between growls, as if to say hold still while I clean this, or I’m gonna kick your a$$.

Lefty does exhibit prey drive, more so than his Kangal father, in fact he goes a little crazy if I don’t let him get after anything that he suspects is lurking. Bottom line, he’s working for me here on and around my land, and he’s great out in public, I couldn’t ask for a whole lot more.

Physically he’s a very tall athletic looking dog, 30 plus inches at the shoulder, but not too heavy, with a beautiful light footed floating movement that would be better filmed then typed at ( video is on the to do list ) When people see him they think he’s some sort of Dane cross, and perhaps the best thing about him is… they’re wrong. Though he’s on the scale of a Dane, just minus any of the associated pitfalls

Olympic Quatros

( Germany/Argentina x Turkey/S. Africa )

Dane/Dogo x Kangal/Boerboel

The Olympic Maxi-Melt

aka

Ghengis Afrikracker x Tyra Banks

This is the softest combination on the menu at the moment, for those who want a big dog, but might be a little hesitant to entertain some of the less gentrified breeds. Very large of frame, but still quite athletic, and healthier than any purebred of comparable size. A family dog first.

The coats thus far have varied from short to a sort of mid length with a substantial undercoat. Colors from red and grey brindle to black with lots of deep red, brown, grey and all sorts of subtle differences.

I raised “Quatro uno” ( seen below) to about 10 months. He was a big jolly fellow really, very good natured, an everyman dog, dog park material. I’ve got a nine month old female here now also, she’s much the same, and the feedback I’ve gotten is pretty consistently similar regards the general temperament.

You can see some photos of a few examples below.

Photos of my female keeper coming soon.

To see more click “Mandela”: A strapping young male prospect from the well respected Gretchen Kennel weighing in at 90lbs at 5 months, 120 lbs at 8 months, and too heavy for my old back to carry onto the scale by 13 months as seen in the photo above at 29 inches at the shoulder. He moves remarkably well for such a massive dog.

He’s a lovable fellow really, steadfast, devoted and surprisingly protective for such a good natured dog, I’m quite pleased with him thus far and expect to use him extensively.

As some of you may have noted after returning from S. Africa in the winter of 2010/11 I announced that we would look to import a pregnant Boerboel. That was inspired by the hope to use a male named Nkosi that I found in Pretoria as the sire. Nkosi was very close to my ideal Boerboel, very tall 30 plus inches, very athletic, not too heavy, smart and very serious about being a protector. Mandela is the son of a Nkosi brother, which is one reason I bought him.

Unfortunately Nkosi was killed not too long after I left. But I was able to purchase the first two picks of his last litter and have them shipped over.

”Brickhouse” papered name Melma Milla

and

” Spicylegs” papered name Melma Muntow

Photos soon. When they are of age, assuming either pans out, I will probably do a relatively tight breeding to Mandela, in the hope of producing dogs like Nkosi
