Dogo x Boerboel
aka the
DOBO
These are two of the less gentrified “mastiffs” left on earth. So it does stand to reason that whatever you get, it will be a lot of dog. The major difference in these two temperamentally is that the dogo, as a hunting dog, posses extreme prey drive and the boerboel as a farm dog posses a far more manageable amount. That said there are people using boerboels to hunt hogs and there are some who claim Dogos can run the farm without incident ( not my experience ) In any event expect a splitting of the difference, and a fairly high amount of dog aggression, as that is a reality on both sides.
Physically the dogo is a taller dog and generally fleeter of foot, tighter of jowl, perhaps slightly thinner of coat. The “Standard” prefers the dogo be all white and as a result the Dogo suffers deafness ( there is genetic correlation existing in many “genetically” white breeds ) and sunburns for it’s lack of skin pigment. The Boerboel “standard “ prohibits white, in the name of requiring dark skin pigment, to “endure the African sun ”
Both of these hard fast color rules, though supposedly born with function in mind, are of dubious worth as extremes. One argument for this is that a white dog is much easier to see, which is relevant in many low visibility hunting scenarios. But a spot of black or any other color here or there would hardly diminish ones ability to see a dog. By the same token a little white is not going to stop a boerboel from coping with the sun. These sort of hard and fast color rules are the residue of show rings in my opinion, and have no basis in functional reality.
As such It’s a marriage made, if not in heaven, than surly on my yard. I’ve done it once, and I’ve no doubt I’ll do it again when the possibility of doing with new blood arrives.
